As much as we all love living in this crazy vibrant city with its hectic pace, London life can leave us feeling tired and tense physically, mentally and emotionally. Balancing work, family commitments and social engagements leave a little time for rest and relaxation, but we cannot continue to pour from an empty cup – it is important to take some time for slowing down and recharging our batteries. Yin Yoga is a beautiful way to press pause and leave behind the stresses of everyday life.

Yin Yoga is a slow, mindful, floor-based practice in which postures are held for longer periods of time – usually 3-6 minutes, sometimes longer – to allow a gentle easing and deep releasing of the physical body, slowing down and softening of the breath as well as a calming of the mind.

Yin Yoga focuses on increasing flexibility and range of movement in the hips, legs and the lower spine although some postures for the upper spine and shoulders are always weaved into the class sequencing as well. The long held stretches not only ease away deep held tensions in our muscles but work deeper into releasing chronic tension held in our connective tissues; fascia, tendons and ligaments. Stretching and compressing the tissues of our body in this way also stimulates the movement of energy along the Meridian energy channels used in Traditional Chinese Medicine – acupuncture and acupressure – leading to an increased overall sense of health and wellbeing physically, mentally and emotionally.

Yin Yoga is suitable for all levels and all bodies – men & women – beginners are warmly welcome, and there is absolutely no need to be able to touch your toes. Come as you are, wear comfortable warm clothing which allows you to move freely, and allow yourself the time to connect with your body, breathe, stretch and release.
